While numerous videos showcase Cybertrucks undergoing vinyl wrapping, colored PPF applications, and similar treatments, there’s been a notable gap in content detailing the installation process. Our focus lies in demystifying the intricate steps involved in applying vinyl and colored PPF to the Cybertruck, while also assessing their durability.

In this endeavor, we’ve opted for Avery Dennison’s Satin Khaki Green for the front door, and Ivios’ Gloss Lake Blue for the rear door. Dive into the video above to witness these two stunning colors in action.

Vinyl and PPF Overview

In a nutshell, vinyl is significantly thinner than PPF, sometimes by up to four times. The primary allure of vinyl lies in its extensive color options and relatively lower price point—it typically costs about half as much as PPF. On the other hand, PPF boasts hydrophobic properties and offers superior protection against rock chips and scratches.

Therefore, if you’re envisioning off-road adventures with your Cybertruck and desire effortless cleaning afterward, PPF might be the ideal choice. However, if your priority is solely a color change, PPF is the way to go. The best part though, is that these are both DIY-able. You can get what you want, and you can do it right from your garage. We have DIY vinyl wrap kits out now for the Cybertruck. PPF and colored PPF will be out soon, so stay tuned and sign up for notifications here.

Vinyl Installation on Cybertruck

Vinyl offers remarkable flexibility and easily conforms to the contours of a vehicle’s body. Equipped with memory-based technology, vinyl allows for seamless correction of errors using heat. Additionally, its air release technology facilitates the removal of bubbles, as demonstrated in the video.

During the dry installation process, a microfiber felt squeegee is utilized for optimal results. Weather conditions play a crucial role in vinyl installation; maintaining a moderate room temperature and avoiding humidity greatly simplifies the process.

In our approach, we provide a pre-cut template as part of our DIY kits, simplifying the installation process. For instance, our template includes backing cuts in the film, facilitating installation in sections for an exact fit that seamlessly wraps over edges, ensuring a long-lasting finish. We take all the guessing out of the process and provide all the tools and step-by-step install guides you need to successfully install your kit.

Colored PPF Installation on Cybertruck

PPF installation differs from vinyl, requiring a wet method that employs a rubber-like squeegee along with slip and tack solutions for proper adhesion. One challenge unique to wrapping the Cybertruck is its ultra-thin, squared edges, which are notably rougher compared to traditional body panels with rounded, smoother edges. To ensure effective adhesion on these hard edges, we’ve had to innovate.

Our solution involves using an adhesive promoter, such as Primer 94 from 3M, as demonstrated in the above video. Additionally, we experimented with burning the edges using a torch to enhance adhesion.

The video above is a look inside our research and development process, so tag along as we figure out the best way to make these PPF DIY kits so you can install without any worries.

Quality of PPF and Vinyl After Road Trip

After completing a 600-mile road trip, I’m excited to share the results of how well the vinyl and colored PPF held up.

Let’s start with the vinyl—it installed effortlessly. While the adhesion wasn’t necessarily superior, it was notably easier and less time-consuming during install. Notably, there were no failure points; everything held up admirably.

As for the colored PPF, while it didn’t adhere perfectly all around, the panels remained bubble-free, and the color appearance was exceptional. I’m considering adding a tad more material to improve adhesion around the edges. However, where we applied adhesion promoter, the PPF stayed securely in place.

Overall, I’m highly impressed with the performance. I’m eager to fine-tune this kit for swift release. Sign up here to receive notifications once the PPF kits become available this month! Not sure what color you want? Check out our wrap visualizer for inspiration.
